The route Lunde - Fjærland
One of the classic routes above Jostedal glacier is the transition between Lunde in Jølster and Bøyadalen in Fjærland. From Lunde, the route turns off the national road just at the tunnel opening and goes a little further into the valley, then steeply up Lundeskaret. First, the path turns up on the east side of Skarsgrova, then the route crosses the river below two large boulders: Storalteret and Veslealteret. In 1903, Andreas Lunde received support from the Norwegian Tourist Association to blast shelves into the mountain and secure the ascent with bolts and string. Then he turned parts of the path into stairs. There were 53 steps in the 1930s. After the steep climb, the terrain flattens out at an altitude of 1000 meters and the route goes on gentler slopes north of Trollevatnet and over Marabreen to the highest point at Kvitevardane, 1445 meters above sea level. The road down to Fjærland is a smooth and steep descent of over 1300 meters to Bøyastølen.
